KeepMedia has reported that the Playstation 3 will not be doing a central service for PS3 online gaming. Instead, it will be done in the same manner as the PS2. The Playstation 3 is said to be with an open architecture for its online model. This means that each company decides what effort to put into it. Considering how incredibly poor their online support is for the Playstation 2, this does not look good for Sony.
Sony runs the risk of repeating its mistakes. The Playstation 2 online model has proven to work successfully on some sports games, a few FPS games such as SOCOM KillZone, and some RPG games such as Final Fantasy XI, but outside those, very few Playstation 2 games have been found to be a success online. We can only hope that Sony does a better job promoting their online experience with the PlayStation 3 and at least make attempts to have some sort of service in the near future.
What seems odd about this is that Microsoft and Nintendo have proven that advertising an online community can bring alot more sales, why isn’t Sony taking much advantage of this market?

well the thing is with xbox they made it so that the developers didn’t really have to put much work into it, the system was built in with various things that could be applied to almost every game from downloading content to multiplayer. It made it so the game developers had to do very little to make the game online, with ps2 on the other hand the developers have to basically design there own online network. so every ps2/3 game will be like making a halo 3 because of all the shit that went into that online in addition to the build in features.

So you’re saying this could detract some developers from the PS3?
November 3rd, 2005 at 6:43 pm
yeah it could easily detract developers, because microsoft already has a built in system, so if developers want online with ps2 they need to do more work than with xbox
