Lately I have been reading a lot about the Next-Generation consoles and despite the praise I back with Sony when discussing the Xbox 360 I have began to worry. With the PS3 slated for a 2006 release date I wonder if it will be ready, more ready than the 360 at least. With a few titles declared officially for the PS3 I am not impressed yet. And with GDC coming up in March I really hope that Sony delivers something other than the shiny cover and demo reels they have been showing us for the past 9 months.
So where lies the fate of the PS3? In two things, one is it’s robust hardware. Of course I speak of the Blu-Ray Technology, despite what analyst reported the price of the drive to be at $1800 dollars I find that highly unlikely and a bit over estimated. Either way the Blu-Ray tech will be a huge factor in whether or not the PS3 sells well.
The second factor, and the most important(not sure why I didn’t say first) is the game. Without games no one will buy your console. Prove of this is with Sony’s PSP, despite it having the leading edge technology UMD supported movie playback and the works, it is still largely out sold by Nintendo’s DS that focuses on games.
So the game of which I speak of is none other than Killzone 2, I know that PS3 had a lot of good showings and even Unreal 2007 was completely stunning. But the fact of the matter is the game that turned heads back at E3 is still turning heads in question to whether it was real-time or not here in January. The good news is Killzone 2 news is not far off as a tester for the game assured the world early in the week, though his validity is questionable all we can do is have faith.
I just hope Sony doesn’t make the same mistakes as Microsoft.
