It would seem that over the span of E3 and even in recent days that the fans and even some of the bigwigs at Nintendo, favored the name Revolution over the change to Wii. So why then did the company proceed with the name when people like Miyamoto and even the Regginator were more favored on the other name? Not to mention how foolish consumers have to feel when they go to Best Buy to preorder the Wii. However even at the same time, Miyamoto defends the name change despite not entirely liking it.
In an Interview with CNN he had this to say :
“When we first thought about it, myself and others felt that the name Revolution was very appropriate to what we were doing,” Shigeru Miyamoto told me recently, “but [Revolution] is a name that was almost threatening to non-gamers. It wasn’t acceptable. So we thought this was more friendly and inviting.”
I found this rather interesting, considering he himself did prefer the Revolution, and well, it seems like the companies are really trying hard to expand they gaming audience, however one has to wonder if it’s really worth it.

I think it’s also important to note that as a name “Revolution” is just generally meaningless. In something like Google, who knows how long it would take Nintendo to climb up for such a ridiculously common word. Wii will take some time since WII is an acronym for other things, but not to the level of “Revolution”.
I was reading something elsewhere about some concern in countries such as China where a name like “Revolution” just would not sit well. Who knows if that’s really true, but it seems plausible.

Yeah, I understand why they didn’t go with revolution, but the transition from revolution to something like “Wii” was far from unexpected. I am one of those people that defend the name though, but when I see creators of mario and bigwigs saying wtf was Nintendo thinking, it makes me laugh

Its a really bad name… nintendo should sell gaming machines to gamers not to grandma’s and kids. If it does that its going to loose its “coolness” factor and turn out to worst then a n64 or gamecube. If the games arent going to made of high quality people like us gamers wont buy it and I dont think a 50 year old man would one day say, hey I feel like going down to the mall and buying a wee. If the games are too simple, if its not responsive enough or if it lacks content and features it would prove to be a gimmick and this would be the last roll of the dice for the nintendo something like dreamcast from sega. The third bad console is the nail in the coffin the. It would be something similar to the scenerio which happened to sega first they had the 32x/sega cd,then the saturn and then the dreamcast. It could turn out to be a 2 horse race.
