GamesRadar is reporting that major game retail shop will not be able to sell pre-owned PS3 games, because it will be illegal for customers to sell any PS3 games that they’ve bought.
Why?
Apparently Sony plans to adopt a licensing system that will not allow gamers to own the game that they have paid money for. In reality, you are paying for a license to play the game, but the software itself will still be Sony property. That’s right. You will never own a PS3 game. And because it is technically not your property, you cannot sell the games back to the retail stores. Technically you’re renting the game from Sony.
Now, not only is this a major show of disrespect to the gamers who cough up their hard earned cash just so Sony can stay in business, but its also a big blow to retail game stores who make an absolute killing off used game sales.
Sony, what the **** are you doing? Am I the only person that doesn’t feel, in a wierd way, offended by this? I have supported the PS3 through all the questionable decisions they have made with the PS3 so far, but I cannot support this. I can’t believe this is even legal! If this is true (keep in mind Sony itself has confirmed nothing as of yet) I will not buy a PS3 because I refuse to pay for something that I do not own. This would be the ultimate show of disrespect to the people who put them in their presegious position in the first place.

I heard about this last e3, after the talk of blu-ray copyright protection, it would seem that they would have to make it so that you can only run what you have on your console, however this is supposedly being fixed, to prevent illegal copying of media and still allow you to play the games and rent them and such.

I’m not sure they ever said anything about this though. Just think. You pay 60-70 bucks for something that should cost a lot less, and you legally don’t own that game. Sony would technically just become a giant Blockbuster that doesn’t charge late fees. It’s sickening….

Really Calm down this is soooo blown out of preportion…your information is false..
What Sony is doing is protecting their intellectual rights for their Blu-Ray technology, this does not make it so that only one console can run a game, it makes it so that any illegal backups of boot games cannot be made because of a specific encoded signiture in each blu-ray DVD.
Plus lets be smart about this…If sony did this, think about how much money they would lose to major retailers such as blockbuster, ebgames, and walmart. Do you honestly think that they would only allow for one game to be played on one console? Comon man…
I seriously doubt they will have this rumor patched up as soon as possible….again they are just trying to protect backup games much like what Microsoft is doing. They dont want any incidents like a Magic Swap disc to be introduced to their newly founded PS3

I’m just going on what’s reported, JC. At least I have a source….

Yeah, I agree with Fuyuki. Although this seems back to in a way “not ownm the game”, it is a business strategy to keep one game per console and not resellings. It will crush those who usually did the trade ins, but who knows. Maybe Sony will do a special thing for that to keep such service available, or not. Depends.
So, yeah, this is a disappointment but an understanding point.

I’d say it’s just our good (cough) friend (cough) Microsoft generating rumours to make Sony look bad through veils of uncertainty and doubt.
Damn you Microsoft!

Sony is making themselves look bad all by themselves

Well in all reality you have never owned a game, you’ve been renting them the whole time. This is just taking that idea a bit furthur. And with Online downloading on the rise game shops have more things to worry about then selling pre-owned games.
