Listen carefully. Hear that? It’s the sound of one million Xbox 360 owners letting out a collective whimper.
For almost a year now, they’ve held Gears of War as their trump card, their answer to pretty much anything and everything. The Wii is only $250? That’s nice, but does it have Gears of War? The PS3 has BlueRay? Big deal — We have Marcus Fenix! There’s war in the middle east? I’m not worried, I just curb stomped a grub.
Then came this year’s E3 when Epic Games Lead designer Cliff “Cliffy B” Bleszinski took the stage and confirmed what everyone already knew — Gears was on it’s way to the PC complete with new content and a spiffy new map editor. No big deal most thought, as the 360 faithful held out hope for a Xbox Live Marketplace download of the new content.
Not so say Bleszinski and Gears PC producer Rod Fergusson. In a recent interview, the pair dropped the bombshell that the Xbox will not be seeing this new content:
“There is no plan to provide the PC exclusive content to Xbox 360 gamers for a number of technical reasons. One is simply the size and scope of the new content which would be difficult to deliver as an update. But more importantly, Gears of War for Windows was not created with the same version of Unreal Engine 3 as Gears of War for 360. We wanted to take advantage of all the latest and greatest optimizations and features that are constantly being added to UE3 and as such, this new content is not easily compatible with the Xbox 360 version.”

Doesn’t really surprise me, those technical reasons are microsoft was going to force them to charge far too much for the downloadable content and want a reason to push pc sales so the gamers have something unique that they haven’t had on gears yet…
