The problems and errors with the 360 have been few, though despite how blown up I like to make anything wrong with something of Microsoft and it’s products. As we reported earlier this week there have been many problems found with the 360’s crashing and many other things, the solution however is about as laughable as the problems. As common sense as this may seem still it seems countless made the same mistakes.
The main problem seems to be an overheating of the console and/or power supply, this is caused for 1 simple reason and that is lack of ventilation. Despite this being a console you have to release it is very much like the PC that you are more than likely resting your feet on at the moment(:P). An Xbox 360 like your PC cannot be in some like closed area, though I really wonder how enclosed the consoles and power supplies are, considering how large the power supply is there really is no way of hiding it to begin with.
Some suggestions have been however to limit the lack of space for the system as much as possible and even some sources have suggested elevating the power supply to allow the air to circulate the entire beast, as absurd as this may sound it seems to be fixing the problems that many players are having. So if I have deterred you from buying a console for that fact, I am sorry, but I still say those power supplies need to be recalled… unless you are putting a blanket over your power supply, I see no reason for it to freeze.

April 27th, 2006 at 12:29 pm
played spin top 2 one match lasted TWO HOURS! froze just after I won the game, didn’t get to save it
June 2nd, 2006 at 11:44 pm
I am on my second 360 already and both of them have had major freezing problems (hence the “swapping out” of the first 360). I have tried everything from ventilating more (although it was super ventilated to begin with), elevating the power supply, removing the hard drive, making sure the date/time were correct, etc. I’ve seen forums that say the problem is miniscule, and it’s being blown out of proportion. I find it hard to believe that considering I have had two consoles act the same way. Actually, my second has been worse. Ugh!!! Microsoft needs to own up to the problem and replace/recall the things and make the consumers happy.

Sup, I got 360 and its started to freeze up on me, i have fan constantly running toward it with the AC on i have it out in the open. but still i have problems
July 26th, 2006 at 2:07 pm
I think all that loading with Oblivion is the problem with mine. I learned loading times are slowed down when your playing music on it. I have the room freezing. I also have a 20$ intercooler from Nyko that “seems” to be helping.
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:50 am
all my games freeze mainly on the loading screen havnt phoned MS yet but will do soon
October 10th, 2006 at 12:49 pm
hiya. I have had major problemos with my units. I have had three units, two power supplys & two hardrives for my xbox 360. Games always freeze up, I even had xbox live freezing up when I was browsing the market place. I have tried everything here and still have problems with this and games freezing also. I dont know what else too do. Anyone have some useful info for me??
October 17th, 2006 at 8:46 am
My 360 freezes up and none of the supposed solutions seem to work. Save your money!
PS - anyone wanna buy an xbox 360?
November 3rd, 2006 at 1:04 pm
Hey, I’m on my first Premium edition console and I am experiencing random freezing problems while playing. I have considered getting a replacement or getting the Nyko Intercooler. Any other suggestions?

Xbox 360 Freezeing? Let Your Power Supply Breathe!
I had tons of problems with my Xbox 360 after I got it setup. First I had three red lights on the Ring of Light. After getting that fixed, my screen would freeze before the Xbox 360 dashboard would fully load. Eventually I got into Need For Speed: C…
December 21st, 2006 at 12:28 am
Yo my second 360 started freezing and then the red light thing same as my first 360. When speaking to ms they said its not a common prob but that is b/s. They now charge like $130 to fix it but who knows how long it will last. I haven’t heard much in the media about this problem but it needs to be addressed….
December 24th, 2006 at 9:16 am
i didn’t even get the warranty…and 6 months later chrissy comes…my xbox starts freezing on games…but the dashboard works fine…i think its a heating issue definately, if not a laser issue (highly doubtful) since when you put in a disc the things starts making noises like a kettle (as they do) but usually this means the consoles heating up at the same time!!! and 5-10 mins later the thing freezes… my console is ventilated well though…which seems to me like M$’s rushed console coulda done with some revision before it came out…@!#!# arrrgh i still think PS3 is wont do well though…so far all i heard form nintedo is broken straps on the remote g wii!!! (ps. i hate nintendo! lol)
December 24th, 2006 at 9:19 am
yea i recon your right xbox heating issues should have been fixed before they rushed it out!!! look how long theyve had the market with this next Gen console….they coulda done some revision before it came out and still owned the market M$…greeedy people…but still they are doing overall a good job in owning PS3
December 27th, 2006 at 6:15 am
yep my xbox keeps freezing 2.. got it 1 day ago and when playin call of duty it just freezes on screen when it becomes all action packed. really enoying.
December 29th, 2006 at 6:25 pm
I have had mine for about 6 months and never had a problem but i had recently got a hd tv and then the game started freezing does anyone know how to fix this?
January 1st, 2007 at 12:29 pm
I bough my XBOX from Toys R us (who incidently have people testing products in their stores with no qualifications, so do not believe what they tell you , and that is on any console) , I started freezing up and the sugested that I raise the power supply and talk to Microsoft. I have found that the sellers are absolving themselves of responsibility - remember your contract is with the seller and not microsoft. demand an exchange under the supply of goods and services act 2002 , goods not fit for purpose and of poor quality, the seller will argue that it is no their problem and to talk to microsoft but do not be fobbed off. This problem will only get resolved if we all fight the sellers , who will then fight microsoft.

Chris Seymour

Jan. 22/07
I was thinking of buying an Xbox 360, but you guys kinda convinced me it’s a peice of crap. Has microsoft done anything to fix the problems or they still pumping out crap consoles?
I think I’ll get a PS3 instead.
January 2nd, 2007 at 2:22 pm
my 360 is will not even turn on anymore…i bought it off ebay so i don’t even have a warranty, i tried the ventalation shit, didn’t work to well, i tried plugging the power supple into a wall outlet insted of a power cord….we’ll see if this works….i need a butt peace
January 2nd, 2007 at 8:15 pm
could it freeze up after a power surge?
January 3rd, 2007 at 2:24 pm
Piece of crap is right. My girlfriend and I got a 360 a couple of weeks before Xmas, and after a clean week or two, now it’s freezing up so often it’s just unplayable. Doesn’t matter what kind of ventilation we give the console and brick. This piece of garbage is a $400 doorstop.
And the saddest thing is, it’s not like we shouldn’t have expected a Microsoft product to freeze up. Everything else they make does. The day a Microsoft product doesn’t freeze will be the day they start making freezers.
January 3rd, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Yeah mines freezing up too. I just got mine yesterday and it has already freezed 5 times. My room is colder than anything and its pretty much on an open table. I called M$ and they’re sending out that box to fix/replace it.
January 11th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
i’ve had my 360 since Xmas. look, every gaming console that has ever been made has had some problems. and there are going to be the percentage of products that are lemons, just like cars. MS will normally fix any problems. the 360 is not a bad product, if it was you would hear lots more complaining about it and not just on these pissy little forums either. stores are still stocking up regularly on them, and that says something. my 360 has frozen ONE time since christmas, that was after about 10 hours of gameplay. I don’t like MS just becuase i don’t support crooks and copycats. But i do like my 360, and also anytime you buy a used product you know you run a risk of it not working.
Also, don’t go to your retailer you bought it from for them to fix your problem, thats ludacris. Just call MS act like an adult and deal with them on the console. This same type of situation happens with every new product on some scale. Its just a diff. item, diff. problems.
January 11th, 2007 at 8:42 pm
oh, and it is possible the HD might have an effect on it freezing, i know others who have theirs freezing only when setup HD and the ONE time mine froze was when hooked up to my new HDTV. One more thing anyone just getting an XBOX needs to know as well is the ginding on the games. don’t tilt the console AT ALL while the disc is spinning, it will grind rings in your games and make them unplayable (but you can have them buffed out normally pretty cheap). All in All the 360 is a good product.
January 12th, 2007 at 10:53 pm
My 360 just started freezing up this week, I have had it six months with no problems unitl now. This must be a bigger problem than what most think why else would they extend the warranty to a year. It wasn’t just a christmas gift from microsoft.
January 17th, 2007 at 2:45 am
I have had my xbox 360 for about a month and have had the same freezing problems. Everything seems ventilated well and my games aren’t scratched. The freezing is random and is sometimes fine for a few hours when I reboot, then it will freeze. Anyone have a solution?
January 19th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
my 360 was working good for about 8-9 months til then i recieved the crap red lights, its broken any1 have a freakin solution?
January 20th, 2007 at 12:01 am
i got a 360 a week ago..and it frooze 2 times 5 mins apart ( Hitman: Blood money) i have no additional cooling, and have it in the same power surge as my comp, and tv, which r both always on also..more then likely mine is freezeing b/c of me.. but i’ve seen many forums with these kinda complaints on it.. so, i’d think twice b4 buying one.. or wait a week or 2.. to see is M$ says nething public about it.. if u got some extra cash.. ps3’s the way to go.. much better graphics.. not as many games yet.. but i have faith..
January 29th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
my xbox 360 freezes 5 mins into a game…i called ms and they said they would send a box out to repair it..can they even fix it or does it continue to happen as before?
February 3rd, 2007 at 7:58 pm
yo sup….my box started freezin two weeks in and no red lights, i can start a game up. then five minutes in and BAM, my screen will just be the same for hours until you turn it off…my console is kinda ventalated i’ll see wut i can do, but i dont think it’ll make a difference…the weird part is the original box’s never had these problems…hmmm
February 7th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
I’ve now tried everything from moving the system in a more ‘open’ area to moving the power supply around (I even tried hanging it in the air, per another post). Nothing seems to work! I’ve even taken it to another tv / power source and the same thing happens. I haven’t seen the red “death” lights come on but it continues to freeze, whether I’m trying to play a game, watch a movie, or just on the market place. I sent an email to support and i’m wondering how long it will take to hear back. They say within 24 hours…. I’m at the end of the road with Microsoft, both with gaming and the PC!
If there’s anyone out there that seems to know the “FIX” we’d like to hear from you!
February 11th, 2007 at 9:47 pm
I have had my 360 since November. It worked great until a month ago. I purchased FF11 in December and it worked great for a month. January 14th it froze in the middle of a load. First time my 360 ever froze. I restarted it and I load up my character and it froze again on the load screen. I removed and installed FF11 on my 360. The game worked fine for 20 minutes, then it froze. After a restart I would be in game for 2 minutes before it froze again.
I reformatted my 360 hard drive and installed FF11. It worked great with no freezing for about a week. Then it would freeze after being in game for a couple of minutes.
My disc was a little worn, so I went and purchased a new one. It has been working OK, I have had the occasional freeze. At first I figured it was overheating. So I moved my 360 right next to a window. Now it stay really fairly cold (I live in Montana and its mid-winter). There is no way it should be overheating now. I still had been getting the occasional freeze. Today I had it on for a few hours and it froze once, restart and it worked fine for another couple of hours. Most of that time I was farming by myself, later I joined a party and the game immediately froze. I turned it off and let it sit for 20 minutes. Turn it on, I run around for 5 mins and it works fine. I get into a party and start fighting then it froze. I let it sit for an hour then I started it up and it froze 5 minutes in.
My conclusion, overheating is one of the common problems.
Its not horribly hard to keep it cool though. The other issue I would attribute freezing to would be the hard drive or the RAM. But I have no way of testing that out at the moment. I just hope when I turn it on tomorrow it will work OK, but we will see.
February 11th, 2007 at 9:50 pm
One thing that I forgot to mention is that EVERY other game I have played on my 360 works perfect and FF11 installs the game on the hard drive(it takes about 6 gigs of space). I can’t help but think that some files are going corrupt on my HD.
February 20th, 2007 at 6:06 pm
I BOUGHT MY XBOX 360 WHEN SONY ANNOUNCED THE PS3 WOULD BE DELAYED IN THE UK. I WAS EXTREMELY HAPPY AT FIRST, HOWEVER I HAVE CONSTANT STUPID PROBLEMS THAT POP UP AND DISSAPEAR AGAIN WITHOUT EXPLANATION. ITS MAKING ME THINK ITS GONNA GO JUST AFTER WARRANTY. IT CANT OVERHEAT CAUSE ITS NEXT TO A WINDOW ALMOST ON A GLASS SHELF BY ITSELF. I WOULD RECOMMEND ANYONE TO WAIT AND GET A PS3, I’VE JUST ABOUT HAD IT WITH THIS, ITS FEELS VERY CHEAPLY MADE WCICH I THINK IS PART OF THE PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH DON’T GET ME WRONG, I THINK THE XBOX ONLINE SYSTEM IS FAR SUPERIOR BUT IT JUST DOESN’T WORK. I WANT TO SELL MINE NOW - AFTER CALLING THERE HELPDESK SEVERAL TIMES WITH SILLY PROBLEMS FROM NO SOUND TO PICTURE YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR OVER A HOUR AT A TIME. NOT A CHANCE ILL EVER DO THAT AGAIN - THEY HAD THEIR CHANCE IM GOING BACK TO MY PC AND GETTING A PS3.
February 22nd, 2007 at 8:55 pm
When you have your 360 for a while your games need updates. these are dl on your hard drive. if you put music on it, pics, anything at all…this take away from the HD space. I have mine networked to my desktop, not hard to do and inexpensive. I also hooked up my ipod to it for my music and pics. my xbox has frozen one time on me, like i mentioned earleir in the forum. i know several others who complained about freezing problems, and after we setup the network to their comps and moved some stuff off their HD it was fine. the 360 is just like a comp for games. you have to look at it with the same aspect.
February 26th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Have had my console for about 6 months, and for the most part had no problems, suddenly it wont play anything. Moved it about and even had it on my window with the power supply nwxt to it, just the same. Freezes as soon as i try and play any game but can just about get onto the dashboard ok. Had a PS2 for 5 years with no problems at all yet i’ve paid all this money for a next gen console and games that’s useless.
Microsoft cant get anything right, all about the money with them.
Will miss my on-line contacts but but MS have blown it. Again. Absolute rubbish.
March 26th, 2007 at 12:29 pm
Mine started to freeze after using the HD-DVD. First noticed movies not playing, or getting stuck in Scene Selection menus.
Then the next time I tried playing a game on the 360 it froze. I unplugged the HD-DVD, but that didn’t help. Lots of freezing. Sometimes it wouldn’t get past the initial 360 logo animation. Sometimes it would freeze on one of the out of game 360 menus. Sometimes there would be the 3/4 red ring of death, other times it would be green. Sometimes the screen would just stay black after I turned it on.
I have it well ventilated. I am positive it’s not an overheating issue. I wonder if it makes any difference that I bought the 360 when it first came out?
It’s a heavy boat anchor to ship around for repairs! I’m not buying any more 360 games, or HD-DVD movies, that’s for sure.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:05 am
thats it…
its 5:05am right now and I’m going upstairs and ventalating my 360 before going to bed…
fucking microsoft…
March 30th, 2007 at 12:04 am

April 6th, 2007 at 10:39 pm
my stupid xbox 360 freezes. I really hate when that happens to me. I tried leaving my xbox 360 in a really open space and that big ass power supply and it still freeze on me. I took the hard drive out, I put the right time on, I did that high maintance crap and my xbox 360 still freezes. BUT PAY ATTENTION I ASK THE GAMESTOP GUY WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM HE SAID, THE REASON THE 360 FREEZES BECAUSE EVERY TIME YOU UPGRADE YOUR 360 TO PLAY A GAME THAT COULD BE THE MAIN CAUSE, THEN HE SAID TO FIX THIS PROBLEM YOU HAVE JUSY CALL MICROSOFT TO FIX IT.
April 10th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
I Had my 360 since launch and it only froze about 3 or 4 times on only 2 games, sometimes it will only freeze with certain games. then i bought that intercooler fan and it works fine. (if your 360 has a problem and you call microsoft dont say you have a fan on it or anything your waranty will be void!!, even a nokia intercooler.)
April 15th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Eighty hours into Oblivion, my saved game won’t even finish loading. 80% of the way it freezes. fuck shit
April 19th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Damn microsoft they dont have any idea how hard it is to buy a xbox360 here in the philippines.. and all i can get is an over heating unit! How can u enjoy to play a game if they suggest to play for an hour ot two. Btw, Mine froze once.. i hope there will no more after it…
April 24th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
This is the most unbeliveable problem. I read that OLDER units are freezing well mine is NOT old. Manufacture dat 8-6-2006 !!!! This is just out of control. A company with Billions of dollars profit can invest a few million in developing a product that WORKS. My god my PSOne never crashed, My GameCube Never crashed….I cant remember my Dreamcast freezing and these are products released 10 years + ago. Wow what a modern wonder the Xbox 360 is !! A $400 heater !!!. So now I am faced with a problem… I cant sell mine cause it no longer works and paying 160+ to get it repaired seems unbeliveable as microsoft KNOW about this problem and KNEW about it when they released it. Why wont the government do something about this. They take products like weight lose products that dont work off the market so why wont they do something about this piece of SHIT!!!
April 27th, 2007 at 4:08 pm
I dont know y my xbox is always freezing when i play: MLB 2K6. It is really geting on my F***ing last nerv!!!
“Thanks” Microsoft
April 28th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

Crap. Now Thank you MS, I’m 100% Sony thankfully to you !! (first time I don’t buy the Nintendo console -> Wii)
Ever owned all console.. but sur will not buy a new vaccum cleaner 360 for that a crap piece of hardware.
as the other one sais.. what did we waited ?
Isn’t it MICROSOFT after All… pathetic
April 30th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
lol my 360 is slow on start up with halo 2, thats the only problem I have had, even when I clear the cache, it froze once during lost planet but I just think it was the game.
May 15th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

May 18th, 2007 at 3:27 am

I have xbox360 and it keeps on freezing and this is something that happens every 10-20 minutes and it realy sucks.what is wrong with microsoft i thought they have the best game system and it has all kind problems.
Somebody tell them to get into something better than producing and freezing consoles.
July 11th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
every freakin time i turn on the 360 the stupid 360 freazes and the turn off/on button turns red i check the connections and their ready pleaes help!
July 12th, 2007 at 2:33 am
I lost all respect for microsoft for giving me a defective console. I’ve had this 360 for a year & a half now. It would occasionally freeze but it was rare though. Now it just won’t quit and I’m gettin pissed not being able to play the only game I ever play which is Fight Night Round 3. I lost 4 matches in a row to mediocre opponents I know I could’ve beaten due to my connection being lost because of it. I have about 10 games that are all useless now. I’m getting rid of this crap. Lucky thing I have a PS3 to turn to but I only watch movies on it for now until the better games come out. $400 down the drain of my hard earned money. Forget even sending it in to Microsoft. None of us should have to put up with that kind of *&#$ in the first place. All about making money I say, and not caring for the consumer. I lost it with the xbox and microsoft. I’m gonna try and sell this crap to my local gamestop. I tried all your suggestions and it works all right, but not permanently. I would like to play continuously with no interruption whatsoever. This is complete B.S. why am I even wasting my time writing this is because I’m fed up and I need to vent. I just want to break apart this console because of my frustrations but $400 is way to much to throw away even when the console doesn’t quite work. I guess I could keep it as decoration for show and tell but not play.
July 12th, 2007 at 4:24 am
Anyone who doesn’t have a 360, do NOT even attempt to buy one. The system sucks monkey balls, it’s totaly grabage. You’re absolutely better off without it.
Wait until the quality goes up, or just get over it and move on.
July 27th, 2007 at 1:45 am
Wow I look online to find a solution to my freezing problem that just occured tonight. I was watching a movie and I got a complete red blinking circle and the movie froze, xbox.com says possible connection issue. I disconnected the power from the power supply and ethernet connection and plugged it back in and began playing MLB The Bigs and it froze. I restarted it and now it wont go beyond the XBOX 360 screen. Thank god I got the 2 yr Best Buy warranty, I’ll just get a new one tomorrow.
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:45 pm
i was gna buy 1 but now im having second thoughts
lol
August 9th, 2007 at 11:48 am
Has your XBOX 360 frozen up while playing a game? Has it scratched game disks? Has it displayed multiple error messages after updates?
Don’t waste your time with Microsoft customer service. They will keep you on hold for an hour or more and simply read scripted responses to you.
File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Use this link and follow the instructions. Microsoft headquarters is located in the State of Washington.
https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx
The BBB will contact them and work on your behalf to resolve the issue. If a business receives enough formal complaints, it sends a strong message to lawmakers.
Stand up for yourself and hold Microsoft accountable for their deceptive business practices. There is no excuse for producing such a large number of defective XBOX 360 units.
September 4th, 2007 at 9:38 am
my box 360 freezes every minute i switch it on.at first i thought it was the best system but now i think it is the worst
October 6th, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Jump back to mircrosoft. Im on a bussiness trip and back home my xbox freezes like everytime I start up playing halo I get to the menu screen and start a ranked match and while im in the lobby the whole system just freezes. I fed up seeing how I sent my last one in cause of the 3 red lights of death. I waited 4-5 weeks for it to arrive back at my house and it worked fine for 2 days. After that it kept freezeing and sometimes it shows me the 3 red lights and sometimes it works fine.
Here are some soultions that I have recovred, but I have not tried yet because like I said im on a bussiness trip right now, but try some of these…
Take a empty box and move the power supply (big grey box that goes from xbox for plugin outlit) and lay it with the box opened up and the power supply on the edges.
Also try:
If you have it connected to a power bar or your using a muliti tool to have more plugins take it out of that and plug it directly into your outlit on the wall.
As I said before I have not tried both of these soultions first hadn, but I hope that this will help you in some way.
October 20th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

Every since I have had my XBox 360, I have had trouble. Could never get hooked up to the XBox Live Internet. Was told when I called them that someone had hacked into the system and that’s why I couldn’t get on. Didn’t even offer a solution to the problem. Not it freezes when I try to play the XBox 360 games. HELP
PLease. It’s been a nightmare trying to get this thing to work properly.
November 19th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
My 360 started showing the red ring of death 2 months ago, I sent it to MS and they sent me back a new one free of charge, but the new console now reboots randomly. Sometimes I can play for hours, and sometimes it reboots after ten minutes or so, and the disc tray doesn’t open, until I wait like 5 minutes or so. I thought it was a overheating problem, but it seems like it’s a DVD rom problem, so I’m gonna call MS, which probably means that I’ll have to send again, and it’s not funny, cause it takes like 10 days or so to get the console back.

Potential UK 360 buyers , buy your 360 from PC World.
They swapped 2 faulty consoles for brand new models when i had problems. Both machines were still under 12month warranty of course, but i managed to avoid the lengthy process of sending my machines back to Microsoft.

ahh ffs i got my 360 just over a month ago, my girlfriend got it 4 my birthday, and now its crashing all the time. no ring of death or anythin. sometimes crashes in game or just on the dashboard, i knew there were problems with 360’s but not on the scale i have seen since searching on the net!! mine is one of the brand new models and is still havin the same problems as the old models, the 28 day return period is over, but i hope they will just let me exchange it in the Game (UK) store. well pissed off bout it, wat a fukin joke that the way some people are gettin this thing to wok is by dangling the power supply by a piece of string WTF!!! fair play they have got it working though! weird thing is it plays my puzzle quest arcade game absolutely fine!! anything else BOOM crash f*ck you lol, none of my USB ports work either 4 sum reason lol. nice.
