Devil May Cry 3Dante's AwakeningWhile most of us lost all hope after Devil May Cry 2 hit the market, for those of us that have picked up Devil May Cry 3 have been more than satisfied. The game takes place as a prequel to the First Devil May Cry. From the start of this game you will realize the hard pounding, combo slashing, finger twitching action that Devil May Cry 3 offers. This game is by all means not for the weak at heart, for those of you who are turned away at the thought of a game were you die around 10 times before the third level, then you may not want to pick this one up. After a few hours of play alone you will fell your right hand like literally begging you to stop. So what am I getting at here? Well the fact is this game doesn't disappoint, amazing story, outstanding game play, and a refreshing hardness. At the start of the game you find yourself(Dante), being attacked by enemies set to your unnamed shop by your brother Vergil. But that doesn't mean Dante doesn't lose his cool, with 4 sickles in his body he doesn't hesitate to turn on the tunes before kicking some hell-demon ass. But don't let the opening cut scene fool you, if you let that many demons hit you chances are you will die. You will find yourself continually in situations where you have to fight countless demons, and with increasingly difficult enemies as you continue, the game never lets up. And just when you get rid of all those pesky hell-demons in your shop a giant tower erects in the middle of the city. You better not get to found of looking at the tower from the outside because almost the entire game takes place in that very tower of hell. Throughout the story you will meet up with a few other characters ranging from revenge seeking chicks to hell-bent demons that want you dead. In true Devil May Cry style they try to get away from the constant action and offer the occasional puzzle, flipping of switches, and even some hidden orbs to aid you in your quest. As you progress further into the heart of the tower you will acquire new weapons, as well as some new styles. The game play is fairly straightforward so you will rarely need anything aiding you in your journey in the tower. The enemies in the game are ruthless and numerous, they also look decent for a PS2 game but it could have been better. Some monsters you may recognize from previous DMC's as well as some new ones. At times the amount of monsters can be overwhelming and you will constantly find your self switching weapons, dodging, and firing blindly into space while trying to take these guys out. The creatures fit well into the environments and do a good job at making you feel like hell is being unleashed. The games environments are fairly well done, they continually change up the areas, showing of the complexity of the tower. Also the game has a refreshing engine, just because you are not set in some dark world the whole time, you find yourself outside, on top of towers, climbing through ruins and such. And eventually you will run through hell/demon world, which looks cool and unique to the typical fire realm. In Devil May Cry 3 you have Swords and you have Guns. These are your best friends and you can change between them very quickly with the L2/R2, and well if you just use one weapon it may harm your rank and the time it takes you to dispose of enemies. The weapons you are given are either your standard used weapons which I feel work perfectly and do everything you would need to, as well as weapons gained from fallen bosses. Typically weapons won from bosses are melee weapons, actually I believe they all are. As for the extra guns they are found around the missions in DMC3 and some are hidden or require you to unlock something. The sounds of the weapons is pleasing but not as pleasing as the sound your weapons making thrashing your enemies. The voice acting can be sort of cheesy at times but it offers a good laugh and shows how bad ass the characters in the game are. The music is not like that of normal adventure games, because the music is mostly heavy metal, and anything fast, no rap or orchestras either though. Most of the weapons you gain serve there own purposes and uses but I feel like the pistols and your rebellion sword are just the best because they are the fastest and offer the most combos. At times some aspects of the game can take away from the experience. My only negative is the occasional camera angel that is just to hard to see whats going on. But the game makes up for that with the auto targeting system. As nub as that may sound it can be a burden as well, you will continually attack enemies far away while you could have kept your combo going strong with an enemy beside you. You can change the target but pushing down the left thumb stick can be a burden while trying to dodge enemies and attack them at the same time. Another aspect of the game is collecting, whether its orbs to upgrade and buy weapons to keys and amulets you will find this an on going part of survival. Your ranking in levels is effect by 5 things: the time it took you to complete the level; the amount of orbs you gained while killing your enemies; your style points which add up depending on how well your combos are or how long they go; the damage you took from enemies; and the amount of items used. Of the most important are orbs and style. Because the others really don't effect you just the rank you get for the level you will find orbs and style the most important. Orbs are required to buy items and upgrade your weapons, and you will find the orbs gained from levels will not be enough to upgrade weapons and buy health for hard boss battles. So chances are you will find yourself replaying some levels like the first one to gain quick orbs. The style points also effect the style you are currently using. The better you do in style the more experience you earn for a certain style you are mastering. The first 4 styles offer the ability to level them up so each style has stronger attacks or unique added abilities as you master them. I found that each of these are effected by your combo meter and how fast you kill your enemies. This also means you have to try not to get hit, because as soon as you do your combo meter is reset. The game overall was awesome, I was more than pleased and got a lot more than I expected out of this title. You will get a good 20-30 hours of game play at least if you only play it one time. And its so much more rewarding to beat the game in Dante Must Die mode then it is in the standard hard mode. For some heads up you should know that by default the American versions normal is the Japaneses hard, and after 3-4 deaths the easy mode will be unlocked, but don't expect much difference in difficulty. In conclusion this was an awesome game, if you enjoyed Prince of Persia, or even the original Devil May Cry, you will love the fast based action of this prequel. The game offers a unique variety of cool weapons countless enemies, and memorable bosses. Final Score - 9.2/10 |
