Doom 3The return of DoomJust when you thought the world was freed of the demons of doom it returns one last time. Doom 3 is a modern day doom, based on the fact that Doom 3 acts as though the other Dooms never happened. You are brought into an intense game with slow paced story and a whole new engine. As of right now this is the hottest looking title to come out this year or ever on anything. The game will make your jaw drop at its amazingly rendered levels and surreal scenes of hell. When the game is tweaked all the way to ultra it nearly feels real, it looks that good. But its not just a graphics based game. The game has a very in-depth story and well done level design to keep you on your toes the entire time. At the start of the game you continue your role as UAC Marine assigned to the Mars research base. Almost as soon as you get off the ship and talk to the guy sitting on the bench you will realize something is wrong and its got the entire base completely spooked. There are constant disappearances, uncontrollable illnesses and outbreaks of insanity and rage. Whatever is happening everyone is feeling it. And as if the feeling of fear is not enough, the people at id made sure you felt a sense of utter fear. The entire game is Dark...Very Dark. Any well you better get used to it. It seems to me that the people at UAC couldn't afford some good lights. Ok now that you got some background you start the game. In one of the first areas a man informs you that you are to meet Sergeant Thomas Kelly. He also gives you a PDA. This is a very important item in the game and will be used almost all the time. It has the ability to Download other peoples information like Codes, Security Clearance, and Video information. They do a good job of making sure the information you are looking for is usually at the end of the audio logs you have to listen to the horror befalling the Base. I recommend reviewing and reading everything you find in a PDA and recording cabinet numbers and door locks. This is so you don't run out of ammo. Oddly enough as the story continues you will assume radio contact with the Sergeant is constantly nagging at you to pick up the pace(and why he's not a blood thirsty zombie I don't know). He will be giving you orders the entire time cause he seems to be one step ahead of you and knows what's wrong where ever you seem to be. You will have to turn on power, activate teleporters, and along the way pick up some new weapons to help you out. Although the Serge is not the only one helping you. It seems that there are some other remaining men that give you information or entrance to areas with ammo and weapons(so don't kill them). The monsters look amazing in this game, they did an awesome job recreating the old monsters we know and love into full 3d horror. Even with a few new additions I see no flaw in the design of these demonic creatures. Although the creators of the game sort of clash there own creations with the dark environments they rendered the demons in. Because it is so dark it can be hard to see the amazing detail and design in the creatures. So sometimes you just need them to get up in your face for the sake of design. The environments are also just stunning. Everything looks so real. And you will find almost every area has blood somewhere. You will notice the insane detail that went into creating every area and even though your in the same complex most the game each new area is a new adventure with its own tweaks to make it different from the rest. The game also uses advance shading that makes the worlds just insanely scary. I mean when you can only see half of a room chances are something is coming out of that darknes. And the fact that you can go on the Martian planet is sort of refreshing. But don't expect you wouldn't find some demons out there either. In Doom 3 you have Weapons and you have a flashlight. Both are very important and will decide weather or not you make it off this hell infested world alive. The weapons do there job even though you may find that some weapons later on just don't pack the punch of a close range shotgun hit. The sounds on the weapons are generally good and the background sound effects keep you very much in the mood to uh be scared. The voice acting was prime very well done, but you'll find that there isn't very much music in this game. Oddly enough music would probably effect the fear factor in the game anyway. As for your trusty flashlight, it is almost required in every area. Because Doom 3 is very dark you will find the flashlight useful in more than one place. The creators will actually hide things like extra health and spare ammo in dark-lit places thinking there to scared to even look. Or because switching to the flashlight is a daring task. You really don't want to be caught be some zombie or imp head-on with nothing but a flashlight in hand now do you? The flashlight also slows down the game. You will find your self crawling around dark areas with flashlight in hand moving well slow. You want to be able to pull out your gun fast enough to blast whatever is scaring you. It is truly foolish not to use this flashlight. Because you will find that there are monsters hiding in the darkness just waiting for you to do a certain thing and then they will attack. As for the game in overall it was pleasing to have completed the game and I had a sense of greatness. Not only did I enjoy playing it but it was longer than I thought it would be. I figure how many times can they scare you and still have a good story to flow with it. Well depending on weather you were the cautious type that was a good friend to his flashlight it could take a little over 25 hours. But for those that just want to beat it the game and ran head-on shotgun firing at everything that moved I say 20 hours or more game-play. Although there is nothing really revolutionary about Doom 3 other than its engine it was very enjoyable. And well just a great game over all id did a great job remaking the first Doom into a 3d masterpiece. Final Score - 9.5/10 |
