Denzel is a new character in the movie and plays a rather unusual role. It would seem he is there to show us the condition of the children and the effects that the SHM are having on them. He is about the same age as Marlene and appears to have no other family to take care of him.

In the movie he shows us the perspective of the children that are suffering and being controlled. After succumbing to the hope of a cure of the Geostigma he goes with Yazoo and Loz to the ancient forest. There he drinks the water that has been I guess sort of poisoned by Kadaj and from there they are under there control and used as puppets. Despite Denzel not having a family it would appear that Tifa is very attached to Denzel as is the rest of the team, and they have taken him in as a rather son. It would seem that Marlene is also very fond of Denzel.
