As we all know, Aeris was killed in Final Fantasy VII the video game. In the movie she plays the role of a spiritual guide, sort of a holy figure that is guiding our heroes to there destination. Although Aeris cannot physically reach out to Cloud, she does however mentally aid him, and in many more ways than that she helps Cloud come to his senses. She remains the same kind hearted young flower girl that first helped Cloud out when he was in a bind. Even though Aeris is dead she still plays a critical role in the plot and story development of Advent Children.

In Final Fantasy VII you first meet Aeris right outside the Mako 6 reactor after arming it and destroying it with the renegade group Avalanche. Though you do not know the connection to the Flower Girl yet you go on your way to meet up with your crew. However after a an accident you have a freak encounter with Aeris again, this time you land in a flower bed at the church where Aeris spends much of her time. It is from this moment on that Aeris plays an important role in the game, she is continually aiding you in various situations and eventually finds out a way to help the planet. However her life is short lived when she attempts to stop Sephiroth on her own. It is the scene at the ancient city which makes Aeris so famous, the scene in which Sephiroth flies in from above and with his Masamune ends Aeris physical life. However Aeris does not just die, she is brought back into the planet and from there helps aid you in your quest to finally saving the planet.

Although Aeris is dead it is no surprise that she has a role in the movie Advent Children, just like in the game she talks to Cloud and the others through the planet, constantly watching over them and always offering aid when she can. Aeris also helps Cloud greatly in the movie, helping him cope with his regrets and doubts, she continually lends Cloud advice as well as hope and the will to fight. It would seem as though Aeris has such a high spiritual connection with the planet that she can continually aid Cloud and the others even though she cannot physical do anything. Evidence of this lies in the sudden removal of Clouds Geostigma and finally at the end when she appears before Cloud just after the Children save him.
