Not much is known about Zack at the moment, though we expect more information when Crisis Core comes out. We known that Zack was a former Soldier that worked along side Cloud, but met his demise in FFVII. However Zack continually appears in both the game and the movie, so he must have been one of Clouds best friends while in Soldier.

In the game we do not ever get to play as Zack, but his name appears a few times. Though we don't learn about it until later when Cloud first tells his story about Mt. Nibel, the one that actually charges up the stairs to attack Sephiroth is in fact Zack, not Cloud. We also see that it was Zack that was traveling with Sephiroth in the mission, however Cloud was there but beside the point. We also learn in Gonganda Town that at one Point Aeris was very close to Zack.

In the movie Zack plays a more mysterious role. At first glance many might not notice that Zack takes the form of a Wolf in many scenes. Evidence of this is the placement of these scenes. Because Cloud and Zack were friends Zack is continually watching over Cloud much like Aeris does. We first see the Wolf at the sight of Clouds old sword, the reason we think it is Zack is mostly because that buster sword was originally held by Zack not Cloud, so the appearance of the wolf there makes sense that the spirit of the wolf is Zack. We again see the wolf in the Ancient Capital where Cloud fights with Kadaj and the others. Though the appearance is short it again shows he is continually watching over Cloud. The Wolf again appears when Cloud replaces the knocked down buster sword. But this time the wolf appears while Cloud is having a flashback of Zack, it would seem every time Cloud feels his Geostigma get to him he has a flashback. This time we see Zack riding the Truck and walking around, and during that we also see glimpses of the Wolf. Lastly when it seems that Cloud has met his demise the Wolf comes to his aid in the spiritual realm just before the Children rescue him. While Cloud is standing in the church surrounded by his friends he sees Aeris and Zack standing together at the doorway, upon seeing Cloud they wave and walk into the distance.
