Sephiroth is one the twisted game characters to ever grace the Final Fantasy series and guess what he makes his return in the movie, and well he serves as an explanation to why the Geostigma is covering the earth and what his motives are in doing so. How Sephiroth appears in the movie though… well I will leave that to the spoils section.
Role in Final Fantasy VII (Game) |
Sephiroth is one of the many enemies that you face throughout the game, but indefinitely he becomes that of the largest concern. In the beginning Sephiroth was a member of Solider, he was unaware of his past and confused about himself. Upon learning that he was created with Jenova (though I don’t think he knew that he was the child of Lucrecia) he basically went insane. He decided that because of how he was created he and Jenova had the sole right to the promise land and he would take down anyone that opposed him. Not only that but once Sephiroth learned of his creation he began to hate those that had created them and taken capture of Jenova, thus leads to the massacre at the Shinra Tower when Sephiroth takes back Jenova and kills the President. But it doesn’t stop there Sephiroth is continually trying to manipulate Cloud to do things that he doesn’t want to and at the end of the first disc, does something unthinkable in gaming. He slays one of the main characters, Aeris is subject to one of the most famous video game deaths of all time and as a result the conquest against Sephiroth becomes more than just a fight for the planet. It comes to the point where Sephiroth is literally holding the live of the planet in his hands and a heads on fight with Sephiroth becomes the only option.
Role in Advent Children (Spoilers) |
Sephiroths role in the movie is one of the most surprising I have seen in some time. Though there were various appearances in flashbacks and such most never really expected him to reemerge. However it becomes rather obvious that the revival of Sephiroth is upon us when we see that Kadaj is some sort of Larva of Sephiroth, thus leading us to suspect that he will eventually turn into Sephiroth. This of course does occur, it seems that Kadaj wanted the head of Jenova for the purpose of merging with it, and as a result he transformed into Sephiroth. One of the more confusing occurrences of the movie I must admit, but after Kadaj transformed one of the most epic battles of all time followed. Also for some reason it would seem that Sephiroth appears to be in the same state he was just before he died in the game, so I suppose Kadaj also carried the memories of Sephiroth as well as the genes required to recreate him. After becoming himself again he proceeds to fight Cloud and spit out information that only helps to fuel Clouds spirit and willingness to fight. In the end Clouds friendships proof more powerful than the destruction that Sephiroth seeks.
